Characteristics of Doctoral Programs

The Characteristics of Doctoral Programs were developed by the Coordinating Board's Graduate Education Advisory Committee (GEAC) to provide a snapshot of doctoral programs offered by Texas public universities and health-related institutions. The information presented in the Characteristics provides institutions with an opportunity for ongoing evaluation and quality improvement, and it serves as a reference for the general public who are interested in doctoral education, including prospective students and their families. The Coordinating Board has adopted rules for the Characteristics of Doctoral Programs, which may be accessed online: Texas Administrative Code

Guidelines

Texas public universities and health-related institutions have reported their "18 Characteristics" for research doctoral programs since 2009. With input and help from the GEAC, the Characteristics of Doctoral Programs have been updated to include professional doctoral programs. Institutions may now decide if a doctoral program is best reported as a research or professional program and report the program's characteristics accordingly. The updated Characteristics of Doctoral Programs provides improved instructions and clarifications about reporting. There are now characteristics which all doctoral programs will report, and characteristics which only research or professional programs will report. The new Characteristics of Doctoral Programs is now available online at: Characteristics of Doctoral Programs.

The Characteristics were originally established in 2008, revised in 2010, and professional programs were added in 2017, with reporting to begin in September 2018. Texas public institutions of higher education should continue to use the existing 18 Characteristics of Texas Public Doctoral Programs for 2010 through the spring semester of 2017. Beginning in September 2018, institutions should use the new Characteristics of Doctoral Programs.

In order to remain in compliance, institutions should provide a single, centralized webpage that lists all of their doctoral programs and provides the links to their programs' Characteristics data. The data for all doctoral programs should be updated annually, no later than December. If there are any changes to institutions' URLs, an institution should notify the Coordinating Board by sending an email with the updated web address to AQW@thecb.state.tx.us.
