The 18 Characteristics of Texas Doctoral Programs were developed by the Graduate Education Advisory Committee to create a snapshot of all doctoral programs at public universities and health-related institutions. The information is intended to provide information to the institutions for self-improvement and to serve as a guide to members of the general public who are interested in doctoral education, such as prospective students and their families.
The 18 Characteristics were finalized in 2008. Below is the original memorandum sent to all public institutions offering doctoral programs, which describes the requirements for publication of the 18 Characteristics data. There are also two versions of the 18 Characteristics: the originally-approved version in effect for publication of data in 2009, and a revised version to be used for publication of data in 2010.
