18 Characteristics of Doctoral Programs

The 18 Characteristics of Texas Doctoral Programs were developed by the Graduate Education Advisory Committee to create a snapshot of all doctoral programs at public universities and health-related institutions. The information is intended to provide information to the institutions for self-improvement and to serve as a guide to members of the general public who are interested in doctoral education, such as prospective students and their families.

The 18 Characteristics were finalized in 2008 and then revised in 2010. Institutions should use the revised 2010 version of the 18 Characteristics in their display of data. In order to remain in compliance, institutions should provide a single, centralized web page that lists all of their doctoral programs and provides the links to their 18 Characteristics data. The data for all doctoral programs should be updated each academic year. If there are any changes to the web addresses that display the 18 Characteristics on an institution's website, then the institution should inform the Coordinating Board by sending an email with the updated web address(es) to AQW@thecb.state.tx.us.
