November 30-December 1, 2017
Welcome to the information site for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s 2017 Texas Higher Education Leadership Conference and Annual State of Higher Education Luncheon/Star Awards Ceremony. The conference and luncheon will be held at the Crowne Plaza Austin Hotel (6121 I-35 North in Austin) on November 30-December 1, 2017.
The focus of this year’s conference will be “Working with Industry to Increase Skills and Reduce Debt.” Our keynote speakers will include experts on guided pathways, internships, financial literacy programs, and other strategies that help students progress through their programs of study successfully and efficiently.
The conference will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 30 with an orientation for new governing board members and other interested education leaders. Special morning orientation sessions will include separate, concurrent sessions for university and community college board members. While these morning sessions partially satisfy the training requirement for newly appointed regents and elected trustees (Texas Education Code, Section 61.084), many tenured regents and trustees also find them helpful.
Conference sessions will begin at noon on November 30 with Luncheon and The State of Higher Education in Texas featuring a keynote address by Dr. Raymund Paredes, Commissioner of Higher Education. Immediately following the luncheon conference and orientation sessions will continue with an overview of the new 60x30TX.com Website and the revised Texas Public Higher Education Accountability System. Sessions will continue with a facilitated panel of legal experts who will discuss effective trusteeship, ethics, and the avoidance of conflicts of interest. This legal panel will be followed by a facilitated discussion where Texas legislators will discuss how Texas institutions of higher education can work with the executive and legislative branches of government to achieve their missions and educate students to supply the workforce needed to compete in a global economy. A special reception for regents, trustees, higher education leaders, and other invited guests will follow these discussions.
Conference sessions will continue on December 1 with keynote addresses and discussions focused on working with industry to increase skills and reduce debt.
The conference will conclude with the Star Awards Ceremony and Luncheon. The luncheon will be held at the Crowne Plaza Austin Hotel from 12 noon to 1:45 p.m. and will feature our 2017 Star Award finalists.
