Texas Teacher Residency Program

In 2013, the 83rd Texas Legislature passed House Bill 1752 codified as Texas Education Code, Chapter 21, Subchapter Q, Sections 21.801-21.806 to address the state's need to elevate the significance and professional nature of teaching at the primary and secondary levels. Public higher education institutions selected for an award with the Texas Teacher Residency Program (TTRP) were to form a partnership with area school districts or open-enrollment charter schools to provide employment to residents in the program. The TTRP was designed to allow teaching residents participating in the program to earn a master's degree and to achieve certification for those not already certified. Additionally, awarded institutions are required to provide a monetary or in-kind contribution or match to demonstrate that the program may be sustained in the absence of grant funds or state appropriations.

In order to be eligible to participate in TTRP as a teaching resident, a candidate must have received their initial teaching certificate not more than two years before applying and must have less than 18 months of full-time equivalency teaching experience as a certified teacher. An eligible candidate may also hold a bachelor's degree and be a mid-career professional from outside the field of education with a strong content knowledge or a record of achievement, or be a non-certified educator, such as a substitute teacher or teaching assistant.
