Texas must dramatically expand our educated workforce to attract, retain, and grow future jobs. Today, we focus on achieving parity with leading states such as California, New York, and Massachusetts. Tomorrow, we must compete with international powers like China, Korea, and Germany. Unfortunately, our emerging workforce is less educated than previous generations and is not keeping pace with the best performing economies in the world.
Extraordinary challenges demand innovative solutions. The 83rd Texas Legislative Session offers an opportunity to pivot towards a higher education policy framework aimed at national and international leadership. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's legislative recommendations are designed to build on progress made and accelerate improvement. The goals are to dramatically increase postsecondary completions, make college more accessible and affordable, and align outcomes with workforce needs.
