The Coordinating Board provides oversight of degree granting career schools and colleges and private postsecondary institutions operating under a Certificate of Authority, and monitors career schools and colleges, private colleges, and out-of-state public postsecondary institutions operating under a Certificate of Authorization. It is also responsible for monitoring the accrediting agencies that are recognized by the Board and for the authorization to use "protected terms" as determined by the Texas Legislature.
