Family Medicine Residency Program

The Family Medicine Residency Program (FMRP) was established in 1977 by the Texas Legislature to increase the numbers of physicians selecting family medicine as their medical specialty and to encourage those physicians to establish their practices in rural and underserved communities in Texas. Since its inception, the program has provided funding support for 8,940 family practice residents.

The FMRP provides grants to Texas's 26 nationally accredited family medicine residency programs, located in every region of the state, and provides strong support for Texas's health care education and delivery network. Funding recommendations are made to the Board by the statutory 12-member Family Medicine Residency Advisory Committee.
