Note:

Recent analyses of work zone crash data indicate that 1 out of 10 rear-end and sideswipe crashes between automobiles and large trucks occur at construction access points due to large speed differentials between trucks entering and exiting the work space and mainlane traffic. Technologies that can detect when a construction vehicle is about to enter mainlane traffic and warn approaching vehicles through electronic signing are available, but their effectiveness in reducing crash risk is unknown. At the same time, connected vehicle technology also exists that can detect when a construction vehicle is about to enter the work space and similarly warn approaching vehicles of this condition, but this concept has not been fully developed and tested. Researchers would determine access point warning technologies available and of interest to TxDOT, obtain, and prototype those technologies, and test their effectiveness in the field at a sample of construction zones in the state.
