Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: Tracking the Primary Sources of Fecal Pollution in the Recharge and Contributing Zones of Edwards Aquifer in Bexar County, TX using Molecular Tools

Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity: San Antonio River Authority

Program Title: N/A

The primary goal of this project is to design and implement an efficient fecal source tracking and evaluation program for the Edwards Aquifer. We seek to identify potential sources of pathogenic fecal bacteria such as municipal waste/runoff including on-site sewage facilities and sanitary sewer overflows, animal waste (livestock and domesticated animals) and contributing factors (agriculture/urban runoff, water temperature and available organic material). The proposed evaluation program will resolve spatiotemporal fecal input, including source identification, potential load allocations and factors that contribute to seasonal variability of microbial concentrations. The pilot project will be designed to support the San Antonio River Authority (SARA) in evaluating fecal microbial input into Aquifer water from the contributing and recharge zones and assessing its potential impact on water quality as well as environment and human health.
