Note:

With the increasing penetration of distributed energy resources such as photovoltaic (PV) systems, electric vehicles (EVs), and battery energy storage systems (BESS) at the individual building level, electrical load patterns becomes uncertain and variable, contributing to grid instability and energy waste. At the grid level, the introduction of renewable energy also makes the power system status more uncertain and variable, which requires more ancillary services to ensure system supply adequacy and reliability. Thus, the need for ancillary service provisions will increase substantially, and utility will require more flexible loads. This project aims to develop a control and communication platform by integrating grid signals, solar energy generation, battery energy storage, and building energy management system. This two-year project will undertake the following tasks accordingly: Year 1: Task 1: Investigate JBSA Building Energy Management and Define Use Case Study Task 2: Design Open Message Bus Design between Building and BESS Task 3: UTSA Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Testbed Setup Task 4: Integrated Optimal Control Design for Building and BESS (Part 1) Task 5: JBSA Demonstration (Part 1-Communication at Software Level) Year 2: Task 1: Control Scenarios Analysis based on UTSA HIL Testbed Task 2: Measurement and Verification of JBSA Building Task 3: Comprehensive BESS Modeling Task 4: Integrated Optimal Control Design for Building and BESS (Part 2) Task 5: JBSA Demonstration On Site (Part 2-Integrated Control)
