This project will bring the state of the art scientific research and tools developed at the STDOI to the clinic, to facilitate a long-term research initiative in personalized medicine. During the 4 years of the project, the initiative will address the health screening needs of 1000 members of families living in Weslaco, Mercedes, and Edcouch (including the communities of Indian Hills and Monte Alto). The project will have multiple impacts in addition to screening and educating participants: it will improve the training of outstanding residents who will transform the future healthcare landscape of the Mid-Valley as they develop their own practices and provide state of the art personalized health care, and it will advance scientific understanding of the determinants of risk for diabetes and related disorders. The scientific program is focused on drug target discovery that ultimately will lead to development of new, improved preventions and interventions for diabetes.
