Carry out controlled studies of the effectiveness, practicality, and profitability of at least ten cover crop treatments. Design, arrange, and carry out on-farm and laboratory experiments on the impact and practicality of cover crop treatments: setting up research plots, taking measurements, and analyzing data on soil nutrients, organic matter, soil moisture, pest reduction, weed suppression, and related topics. Conduct field demonstrations of ecological soil health management methods that are uncommon in the Rio Grande Valley. Demonstrations will include reduced-tillage in vegetables and row crops, vegetable variety trials under organic growing methods (with and without cover crops), and a pilot effort to create a closed-loop system where a farm to raise its own cover crop seeds.
