The goal of this research is to overcome challenges due to real-time processing of massive data in embedded systems in order to guarantee timing predictability, through developing a comprehensive resource management ecosystem in the operating system (OS), namely D3. D3 will incorporate three integrated layers: (I) a “Data dam” layer that pre-processes raw data through exploring data redundancy and characterization, (II) a Data-driven real-time resource allocation layer that co-schedules memory and heterogeneous computing resources from an entirely new yet counter-intuitive angle of memory-centric scheduling, with new capabilities of optimizing data placement and reducing memory contention, and (III) a Data aware OS-level streaming computing system that fundamentally enables a responsive and predictable data-intensive multi-tasking environment on heterogeneous GPU-augmented platforms.
