The project consists of 3 related objectives: 1) Provide a scientific basis and understanding of dishcarge/charge mechanisms involving the formation/decomposition of discharge products on air cathode structures under different reaction conditions. Provide atomic-level insight into catalyst design applying for the selection of solid catalysts and soluble redox mediators. 2) Control surface areas and surface defects, pore sizes, and pore volumes of carbon based air cathode structures. Control the formation/decomposition of discharge products forming under different reaction conditions via electrochemical reactions. Control grain size distribution, grain morphology, crystallinity of discharge products forming inside three-dimensional porous air cathode structures. 3) Determine the relationships between microstructure evolution of discharge products and discharge/charge performances including cycling life. Develop the design principle for air cathode structures, solid catalysts, electrolytes, soluble redox mediators toward improvement of energy storage efficiency and lifetime.
