To further enhance the research activities in these and other areas, we propose to acquire a fast scanning three-dimensional high energy computed microtomography system for volumetric imaging of internal structures. The proposed system will enable a range of research activities, which include (1) scalable nanomanufacturing process for low-density and high strength composites using carbon nanotube sheet inserted at the interphase region between carbon fibers and matrix to enhance interfacial shear strength; (2) light-weight, fast acting orthotic and prosthetic hands through design optimization using the proposed system to determine internal structures; (3) creation of bioinspired robots to create lighter, stronger, and high performance systems and structures; (4) nano/micromechanics for 3D printed polymer composites embedded with micro/nanoparticles such that applied external fields can remotely trigger local heating and the shape memory effect.
