The mission for the FTRC on Millimeter-Wave and High Frequency Microsystems (HFM) is to research and demonstrate techniques to realize high frequency microsystems using mainstream integrated circuit process technologies to create new opportunities for the integrated circuits industry. For the first five years, the Center will focus on high frequency imaging microsystems for industrial applications. The Center will investigate feasibility to realize affordable systems for short range (5cm to 5m) high resolution (8.7cm at 5m) imaging for inspection of material defects, monitoring moisture content, inspection through packaging and others, and for infrared imaging using electronic detection that can be used to image hot spots and in darkness, count people, remote monitor temperature, and others. In addition, the technologies for packaging, testing, broadband circuit techniques for high resolution 3-D imaging, signal processing algorithms to improve image quality, and classification using the images will be investigated. These are fundamental platform technologies that can provide a wide variety of significant opportunities for the integrated circuits industry.
