This instrument will have significant impact on the quality of research carried out by faculty in biology, engineering, and material sciences. The microscope will enable faculty members to perform transformative research and include historically underrepresented Hispanic students in hands-on experimentation. Both undergraduate and graduate students enrolling in Developmental Biology, Botany, Plant Biotechnology, General Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry labs and two labs Micro-techniques in Biological Research and Analysis of Materials will have the chance to participate in research projects. Research in micro- and nano-scale material analysis and teaching modules for video-conferencing or live streaming will be designed using the new instrument. The equipment will also have an impact on the educational experience of students from the Texas Academy of International & STEM Studies and the Hector J. Garcia Early College High School (both located on the TAMIU campus), and Laredo College, as well as other regional institutions such as Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
