The proposed continuation of the REU site in Physics and Astronomy at TAMU-C supports active research participation in meaningful ways by 8 diverse undergraduate students selected from community colleges where students may have had fewer STEM opportunities, especially those from rural areas. This REU project aims at establishing a successful model to addresses the tremendous need, especially in rural areas, of supporting community college students as they make transitions to 4-year universities to complete their bachelor’s degree in physical science and go on to graduate studies. Early involvement in research starting from the freshman year has been shown to be one of the most effective ways of attracting talented undergraduates to, and retaining them in STEM careers. Training in research ethics will be provided to the REU students to build their knowledge of scientific integrity. Special efforts will be made to help the REU students to become independent researchers in the near future. Amount reported: Full amount for duration of grant
