W911NF-13-1-0127 - Our goal is to develop accurate, robust and efficient 3D-aided face recognition algorithms from one or multiple 2D images for verification or identification in adverse outdoor conditions. To achieve our goal, the specific objectives are to (1) develop methods for image enhancement and super-resolution to tackle distance, sensor and resolution inefficiencies; (2) develop methods for 3D face model selection, given one or multiple subject images, using external model databases and 3D-2D fitting in images; (3) develop outdoor illumination normalization methods, with shadows and specularity detection, for light invariant recognition; (4) extract 3D-aided 2D appearance facial signatures with normalized pose and illumination; and (5) validate the methods on challenging 2D benchmarks and assess their practical applicability on real data. The outcome of this effort will be the development of a common framework that can 3D-aided 2D face recognition.
