Note:

One of the biggest threats to our livestock is agricultural pests, as they can act as vectors for fatal pathogens. Recently, there is an explosion of unanalyzed genetic data available to help combat cattle pests, but a severe lack of well-trained bioinfonnaticians to analyze this plethora of data. This grant will support 6 undergraduates, 3 M.S., and 1 Ph.D. students, and train them to conduct bioinfonnatics analysis of data from USDA research. The students will be supervised by UTEP bioinformatics faculty during regular semesters, and USDA staff members during summer internships at Dr. Felix D. Guerrero's laboratory at the USDA-ARS US Livestock Insects Research Lab in Kerrville, TX.
