Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: Knotted Strings and Piecewise Isometric Dynamics

Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity: Mathematical Association of America

Program Title: Mathematical and Physical Sciences
CFDA Linked: Mathematical and Physical Sciences

This project combines two research topics that share the common preparatory background: low dimensional topology. The _first topic, Knotted Strings, concerns the application of Knot Theory to Physics. Particular attention will be placed upon the frictional properties and the physical configuration of knots and links under various conditions. The second topic is, Piecewise Isometric Dynamics. Information overflow in digital signal processing is often modeled by the piecewise isometric dynamics, whose topological interpretation revolves around cutting and pasting. The problems on the singularity structure and its pattern formation will receive particular emphasis here.
