A large number of Hispanic Americans are underrepresented in the food and agricultural science USDA labor force. To combat this shortage faculty at TAMUK will provide undergraduate training through a series of targeted summer short-courses, internships, and research projects in soil, animal, and natural resource sciences. This project is a multi-institutional, Hispanic Serving Institution Regional level ‘Collaborative Project’ involving five institutions that serve the South Texas and Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) regions. This project builds on the success of previous USDA-HSI programs at TAMUK which provided a learner-centered environment in which faculty provided mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students for enhanced learning through research. The faculty, scientists, mentors, and institutions involved in these previous projects were committed to promoting scholarly development and increasing the prominence of underserved students by providing research experience so that a student’s creative research activities could be state and nationally recognized.
