Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: Deer Research on the Comanche and Faith Ranches Phase III

Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity: Stuart Stedman & Dan Friedkin

Program Title: none

Note:

The Comanche Ranch in Dimmit and Maverick counties, and the Faith Ranch in Dimmit and Webb counties provide an excellent base for long-term research on white-tailed deer. The habitat types on the ranches are typical of the western part of south Texas. The ranches are large, which provides options and flexibility in selecting study sites. Additionally, the ranches have important infrastructure to support significant research. The basic design for the research will employ a series of experiments in using 6 high-fenced enclosures of roughly 200 acres where deer density and supplemental feeding practices will vary. The imbedded research will include density dependence, population responses of non-target animals, benefits of maternal groups, effects of supplemental feed on fawn weights, management indicators of excessive density, which bucks are breeding, and the timing of fawning in South Texas.
