This project aims at creating 30 nanotube nanostructures. The research work will be done in collaboration with Professor L.M. Dai at Case Western Reserve University. The work that will be carried out at the University of North Texas is stated as follows: i) Develop atomistic models for nanotubes and graphene and investigate the effects of nanostructure including defects and inter-wall sp3 bonds on the mechanical properties of the nanotube and graphene. ii) Create the unit cell model consisting of nanotube-graphene junction and perform molecular dynamics simulation of nanotube tensile test. iii) Build continuum micromechanics model for the 30 nanotube structure and study the crack growth, fiber bridging and toughening mechanisms. iv) Investigate the electrical response to mechanical damage and explore the feasibility of damage detection in the nanocomposites via electrical resistance. v) Validate the models at micro- and nano-scale by comparing with predictions and experimental results. vi) Perfonn nanoindentation on the nanostructures to study toughening mechanisms and provide the data for model validation.
