Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: HCP: SAN MARCOS TEXAS WILD RICE ENHANCEMENT / RESTORATION

Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity: University of Houston-Clear Lake

Program Title: none

Note:

Protection and management of Texas wild rice in the San Marcos River represents a complex task involving competitive interactions with non-native aquatic plants and  impacts associated with the accumulation of fine sediments in the river channel.  Texas State University is conducting research into Texas wild rice dynamics through removal of non-native aquatic vegetation and/or fine sediment with the selective transplanting of new Texas wild rice plant that have been grown at Texas State University from rescued plant fragments.  Additional restoration efforts of Texas wild rice involve the selective removal of non-native aquatic plants in and adjacent to existing Texas wild rice stands with remedial gardening on a weekly basis to determine the competitive interactions with non-native aquatic species.  In addition, this research is also utilizing two-dimensional hydraulic modeling of flow and sediment transport from Sessom Creek and the San Marcos River to examine a range of management options related to partial or complete removal of the existing sediment delta at Sessom Creek and the potential impact or benefits to downstream Texas wild rice stands.  Results from these efforts will be evaluated through the EAHCP Adaptive Management Program and inform decision makers on changes if necessary to existing biological targets.
