10123-17 PUBLIC EXECUTIVE SUMMARY – RPSEA RFP2010SP001 Identifying and Developing Technology for Enabling Small Producers to Pursue the Residual Oil Zone (ROZ) Fairways of the Permian Basin, San Andres The study would be conducted by the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, Center for Energy and Economic Diversification (as prime contractor) with Prof. R. C Trentham as the Principal Investigator. The other participants include Advanced Resources International, Inc., Applied Petroleum Technology Academy, University of Houston, Melzer Consulting, and the Petroleum Technology Transfer Council. Four small producers: Legado Resources, ER Operating, Timberline Oil and Gas, and Tabula Rosa, along with KinderMorgan CO2 Company will participate in the study and provide the cost sharing. The objective of the project is to delineate the ROZ “fairways” in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico. In addition, the study would develop technology for finding the higher quality portions of the ROZ resource recoverable with CO2 EOR directed toward the small oil producers within the Permian Basin and other ROZ basins within the U.S. In the Permian Basin of Texas thick residual oil zones (ROZ) exist immediately below oil fields productive from the San Andres dolomite. Those ROZs, some well over 200 feet in thickness, contain 20 to 40% residual oil in pore spaces. This oil cannot be produced by conventional production techniques, including water flooding. However, in favorable situations, 20% to 30% of that oil can be recovered by CO2 flooding. A ROZ CO2 flood us underway in the Seminole field and early projection suggest the project may recover 200-300 million barrels of additional domestic oil. Deliverables for the project include: maps of the Permian Basin showing trends favorable for location of ROZs; maps of distribution and chemistry of black sulfur water including distribution of organic compounds related to oil; maps of distribution of hydrocarbons extractable from cores and cuttings; written reports about shows of oil and black sulfur water in wildcat wells providing evidence of ROZs; and conclusions and advice about use of methods developed in the project by small producers. The project will prepare and present papers on ROZs origins and distributions and their potential resources. The potential impact of the project will be large in that billions of barrels of probable reserves, providing small producers information and guidance for undertaking EOR floods in areas previously considered non-prospective. 10123-17
